Nico Klopp

New hang in the Wiltheim wing (3rd floor)

To celebrate the 125th anniversary of Nico Klopp's birth (1894-1930), the MNHA is exploring its rich collection of works by this Luxembourg artist. Born in Bech-Kleinmacher, he left during the war years for Cologne, Düsseldorf and Weimar, where he mainly studied the art of portraiture and of the nude figure.

In 1920, Klopp returns to Luxembourg where he adamantly tries to build a career as a full time artist. He makes a living with prints for different magazines and publishers. As secretary of Luxembourg's Secessionists (1926-1930), he is also involved in promoting modern art in the Grand Duchy.

The artist's career is short but prolific. He dies at the young age of 36. His graphic outlines and his large layers of colour include him in the European art of the beginning of the 20th century. His art combines the international formal language of post-impressionism and expressionism with motives of his native Moselle-region.
