Together with the important exhibition Mummies - The dream of everlasting life, the MNHA presents From the Banks of the Nile to Luxembourg, a small exhibition dedicated to its collection of artefacts from Ancient Egypt. Scientifically analysed for the first time, these objects were donated to the museum in the 19th and 20th century and had not been on display since the redesign of the MNHA in the 80's and 90's. However, some of the objects were used as decorative elements in the National Library's exhibition Le Grand Ouvrage.

In 2012, the archaeologist Manon Schutz (Oxford University) became aware of the figurative and colourful lid of a sarcophagus through the catalogue of that exhibition. During her visit, she had a closer look at the other Egyptian artefacts, thereby initiating a new inventory as well as further research. Heidi Köpp-Junk of Trier University joined the project as a second specialist. Apart from her expert knowledge as an Egyptologist, she brought with her important international contacts such as the restorer Jens Klocke who, among other things, restored the mummy nets.
