Many paintings have been re-framed during their lifetime.
When the original framing of a painting is sadly lost, how do we settle on a new frame today?
Such decisions require us to delicately balance esthetics with art historical information, best based on research. Several examples illustrate how much the frame influences our experience of a painting.
